(Edmonton) Edmonton police are investigating an alleged altercation between Ukrainian and Russian supporters.

The dispute reportedly occurred as people were leaving the Rogers Place arena after the Edmonton Oilers’ victory over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday.

Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has been a strong supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the past. He was booed every time he touched the puck during the game.

Police said in an email that their officers handled the situation and no one was arrested at the scene.

A press release from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress in Alberta alleges that some members of its community were assaulted by a group of Russian-speaking men outside the arena on Wednesday.

Congress wants police to investigate the incident as a hate crime.
