(Vancouver) The Vancouver Canucks announced Tuesday that defenseman Alex Edler will sign a one-day contract to retire as a member of the team.
The signing will be part of a ceremony to celebrate Edler’s career on Oct. 11 when the Philadelphia Flyers visit Vancouver.
The Canucks selected the Swede in the third round of the 2004 National Hockey League (NHL) Draft. He played 925 games with the Canucks from the 2006-07 season to the 2020-21 season, which ranks fourth in team history and first among defensemen.
The 38-year-old also leads all-time Canucks defensemen with 99 goals, 310 assists and 177 power-play points.
Edler also appeared in 82 playoff games and was a key member of the team that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2011, recording two goals and 11 points in 25 games.
“I am honoured to officially end my career as a member of the Vancouver Canucks,” Edler said in a statement. “I consider myself fortunate to have started my career with such an exceptional organization, in this incredible city, with the best fans in the NHL. To finish my NHL career where it all began is something very special for me and my family.”
Edler played two seasons with the Los Angeles Kings in 2021-22 and 2022-23. He did not play in the NHL this past campaign.
