EDITORIAL. Motions of censorship, rumors of reshuffles… The secrets of “longevity” of Elisabeth Borne

At the end of the pension conflict, a new motion of censure tabled by the Nupes therefore failed Monday in the National Assembly. Renaud Dély’s political editorial.

Caramba, missed again… And 17! For the 17th time since her installation at Matignon, a little over a year ago, Élisabeth Borne escaped censorship on Monday June 12. This time, the opposition largely lacked fifty votes to overthrow the government. In March, only 9 deputies were needed. But on Monday, only those of the Nupes and the RN voted for the motion, a coalition which, moreover, no longer arouses any discomfort on the left. Coming out unscathed from 17 motions of censure in less than thirteen months is an unprecedented performance: Élisabeth Borne is indestructible!

And yet, many speculate about his departure. Rumors have started again in recent days even within the majority. Some are betting on the return of former minister Julien Denormandie, the President’s darling. Others lean towards a Prime Minister from the right, likely to enlarge the majority. In fact, the noise of the replacement of Élisabeth Borne was almost born the day… of her appointment at Matignon. Because she was not the first choice of Emmanuel Macron who pinched for the former LR minister, Catherine Vautrin. He only resolved to do so with regret, pushed by the left wing of his majority. Since then, the executive couple has no complicity. And yet, Elisabeth Borne is still there.

No personal ambitions displayed

So why this longevity? First, because she is a practical Prime Minister, comfortable, if I may say so, for the Head of State. He decides, she executes. Without playing any little personal music, or really mezzo voce. Loyal, she displays no particular ambition, unlike Édouard Philippe who got on the nerves of the head of state.

And then, for the time being, Emmanuel Macron is not sure to have better in store. Nothing ensures that a Prime Minister from the right, Gérald Darmanin for example, or Gérard Larcher, would guarantee the rallying of the 40 LR deputies who are lacking to have an absolute majority. Not to mention the defections that could emerge on the left flank. Elisabeth Borne, she still holds the two ends of the “at the same time”. But let those who speculate on his departure be reassured, they will end up being right. In a few weeks, a few months… or maybe a little more.
