Ecuador | State of emergency declared after prison escape of leader of largest criminal gang

(Quito) President Daniel Noboa on Monday declared a state of emergency for all of Ecuador, including in the prison system, following the escape of public enemy No. 1, Adolfo Macias, alias “Fito”, leader of the largest criminal gang, and prison uprisings.

“I have just signed the decree on the state of emergency so that the armed forces have all the political and legal support in their actions,” Mr. Noboa said on his Instagram account. The army is thus authorized to operate to maintain order in the streets and prisons of the country where a curfew has been declared between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. local time.

More details to come.
