Ecuador | Flood toll rises to 28 dead and 52 injured

(Quito) The floods that hit Quito earlier this week left at least 28 dead and 52 injured, according to a latest report announced Sunday by the mayor of Quito, Santiago Guarderas.

Rescuers are still looking for a missing 38-year-old woman who lived in the popular neighborhood of La Comuna, affected by the landslide.

“The total number of people who died is 28, 52 people were injured, including seven hospitalized,” Guarderas told a press conference. A previous toll reported 27 dead and 53 injured.

On Monday, torrential rains, the heaviest recorded for two decades, hit the Ecuadorian capital for nearly 17 hours, with a record 75 liters of water falling per m2against 2 liters per m2 advertisement.

The retention basin, with a capacity of 4500 m3ruptured after receiving almost four times the usual flow.

Buildings and vehicles were damaged, as well as electricity poles.

Mud, rocks, debris and vehicles were swept away 3 km from La Gasca Avenue, where cleanup work continued on Sunday.

The mayor of Quito, a city of 2.7 million inhabitants, said 555 people were affected by the flood.
