Ecuador and Uruguay secure their ticket to the finals in Qatar

Ecuador and Uruguay qualified on Thursday March 25 for the World Cup (November 21-December 18) on the penultimate day of qualifying for the single South American pool.

Uruguay, thanks to its victory over Peru (1-0), and Ecuador, despite its defeat in Paraguay (3-1), will fly with Brazil and Argentina to Qatar. Ecuador (3rd, 25 points) mainly benefited from the missteps of the other contenders, including Colombia, which missed out during these qualifiers.

It will only be the Ecuadorians’ fourth participation in a World Cup, after 2002, 2006 and 2014. Uruguay (4th, 25 points) has been a regular for two decades and has qualified for its fourth World Cup in a row.

Brazil, first with 42 points, crushed Chile (4-0), and Argentina, second with 35 points, will face Venezuela on Friday. The fifth place, offering a barrage against a team from Asia, will be played on Tuesday March 29 during the final day, which will decide between three teams: Peru, Colombia and Chile.

Among the North American neighbors, Canada was beaten in Costa Rica (1-0) and missed a first opportunity to validate its ticket in qualifying for the Concaca zone. For their part, Mexico and the United States are getting closer to Qatar after their draw (0-0).

In total, nineteen teams have already won their ticket to the World Cup. Thirteen countries can still hope to qualify for the competition.
