By bike, Mélanie Plasger, in charge of field and animation at ANPER-TOS (National Association for the Protection of Waters and Rivers), takes the path of plastic harvesting. Every month, it records the waste accumulated in the shore bin, placed near the Vire. “We separate them by material, and then we weigh them”, she says. La Manche has 80 of its boxes, installed by ANPER. In three years, 500 kg of plastics have been collected by walkers or fishermen.

Raising awareness among new generations

That morning, the rubbish collected passes through the hands of schoolchildren, who will have to recycle it. The association regularly intervenes in schools, in order to make the youngest aware of water pollution. “All these plastics, 80% of them come from rivers. So we have to stop them upstream, and when we explain that to children, they know how to explain it to parents very well”notes John Philipot, president of the national association for the protection of water and rivers.
