France has so far been spared from the heat waves, but in Italy and Romania, temperatures are hovering around 40°C.

In the streets of Bucharest (Romania), every corner of shade is prized. The fountains are stormed. Locals and tourists are queuing to cool off. Even animals are getting involved. The thermometer has reached 41°C. “It’s very hard, we’re suffocating”complains a resident. In Serbia, fans and misters are running at full speed.

For several days, a heat wave has been affecting Eastern and Southern Europe, causing fires in some countries such as Bulgaria. The flames have devastated entire villages. “With temperatures between 35 and 40°C, fires can easily be caused by the slightest negligence”said Dimitar Glavchev, Bulgarian Prime Minister. For more than a year, temperatures have been reaching record highs. Heat waves are becoming more frequent, caused by climate change.
