Earth, Wind & Fire drummer is dead

Earth, Wind & Fire drummer Fred White has died aged 67. The group made the announcement on Sunday.

“He plays drums with the angels now,” Fred White’s brother Verdine wrote in a tribute posted on Instagram. The musician died a few days before his 68e anniversary. The cause of his death was not disclosed.

A drumming prodigy, Fred White played with Donny Hathaway as a youngster before joining Earth, Wind & Fire in 1974. He left the band in the early 1980s but continued playing music with other artists, including, recently, singer Diana Ross.

« Protected child, member of EWF ORIGINAL 9 [les neuf membres originaux d’Earth, Wind & Fire], with gold records at the young age of 16, also wrote Verdine White. He was the wonderful brother who was always fun and delightfully mischievous! And we could always count on him to make a seemingly bad situation easier! »
