Thursday, July 28 marks Earth Overshoot Day. That is to say, all the resources that the Earth is able to replenish have been consumed by the inhabitants of the planet. Sandrine Feydel is on the tray of 12/13 to explain what this overshoot day consists of.
Every year it is mentioned in the headlines and it comes earlier and earlier, it is Overshoot Day. But what does this day really represent? “Today we have consumed all the resources that the Earth is able to replenish. We’ve caught more fish, grown more land to feed ourselves than the planet can regenerate.”says Sandrine Feydel. Planet Earth therefore lives on credit until the end of the year and this is not without consequences. “The consequences, we are experiencing them particularly this summer: drought, heat wave, lack of water and loss of biodiversity”adds the journalist.
The problem with this overshoot day is that it comes earlier and earlier in the year. “In the early 1970s, this overshoot day (…) arrived at the end of December. Since then, despite all the warnings from scientists, the situation has deteriorated.deplores Sandrine Feydel. The French are not among the good students since according to the journalist : “If the whole world lived like French people, we would need almost three planets!” Howeverseveral solutions exist to move back this date. “The first solution is to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels: coal, oil and gas. (…) Changing our eating habits would also have a rapid and very strong impact. That is to say, eat less meat and fight against waste”alert Sandrine Feydel.
