Earth Day demonstration in Montreal criticizes François Legault’s energy transition

A few hundred people gathered on Sunday at the monument to Sir George-Étienne-Cartier in Montreal on the occasion of Earth Day to denounce in particular the energy transition of the Legault government.

To the sound of drums and rattles, representatives of the groups behind the organization of the event took turns addressing the crowd to point out the “so-called” energy transition of the CAQ, which is seen more as a economic opportunity according to them.

“It’s really a false transition,” defends Shirley Barnea, from the group Pour le futur Montréal, associated with Fridays for future, in an interview at Duty. They just continue to exploit the territory, continue in the extractivist lineage, destructive of the same economic system that caused the climate crisis, but this time it’s packaged in green.”

At the time these lines were written, the crowd was walking on Avenue du Parc towards the Place des festivals. Other groups are expected to speak, notably the Citizen Action Committee — Northvolt Project.

More details will follow.
