Temperatures well above seasonal norms for the month of February are worrying arborists who are seeing their trees flower prematurely.
The trees are already starting to bud in this particularly mild month of February. The situation worries arborists who expect a destructive frost in the coming months. “When it flowers before mid-March, 9 times out of 10 there is nothing left behind at harvest time”, explains Vincent Zerr, nurseryman and arborist in Alsace. In the Drôme, the same observation where it was 18 degrees several days in a row.
A situation not yet alarming
As a precaution, Grégory Chardon, an arborist in Drôme, installed a device which allows the plots to be warmed and therefore to avoid frost. If he remains vigilant, the situation is not yet alarming at this stage, according to him. Temperatures should drop a few degrees next week to be more in line with seasonal norms.
