“Early Daze,” Neil Young with Crazy Horse

In the chaos of the end of Buffalo Springfield, in the spring of 1968, Neil Young sets out on his own, brave and crazy. A first eponymous album goes down in history. Neil-without-fear recruits a psych-rock trio, the Rockets, at the Whisky a Go Go one night. Unknown and amateur, Talbot, Whitten and Molina are renamed Crazy Horse. With the wandering Canadian, the team of eccentrics records in 1969 Everybody Knows This Is Nowherea rough and beautiful record. Fifty-five years later, the good noise group has survived, and we celebrate by digging up the hatchet. Demos, early mixes, 45 versions and unreleased tracks make up Early Dazeand we are duly stunned. Birds in stereo, it’s simple and magical at the same time. Down by the River reborn through the grace of primitive vocalizations. Cinnamon Girl in extended grinding? We say yes. The first attempt at Helpless dazzles: it’s already paradise. No better birthday present.
