After nearly closing down, Duralex, the legendary French glassmaker, is back in the spotlight. The factory is running at full capacity to meet orders. Since August 1, the workers have become shareholders of the company by creating a production cooperative.
They almost disappeared from our shelves: Duralex glasses are making a comeback. In a Parisian boutique, for several weeks, it has been one of the most requested products. “Duralex is the glasses we had when we were children, they were the canteen glasses we loved, which are strong, unbreakable, we can’t stop Duralex”assures a customer. According to the store owner, the brand’s star and timeless products are often purchased to support the struggling business.
Duralex represents 80 years of eventful history. The employees created a cooperative to run the company. Since then, online sales have tripled. But these online sales represent only 2% of turnover. In La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin (Loiret), the factory means much more than jobs, it is also sometimes a part of family history.
