Duhaime wants to raise the speed limit for all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles

(La Tuque) Like cars on highways, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and snowmobiles should be able to travel 20 km/h more on Quebec trails, according to Éric Duhaime. This proposal would increase the maximum speed of an ATV to 70 km/h and of a snowmobile to 90 km/h.

The leader of the Conservative Party of Quebec wants to eliminate superfluous or inconsistent regulations in the Off-Road Vehicle Act. He made the announcement on Sunday afternoon in La Tuque, surrounded by his candidates in Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec, before going for a mountain bike ride.

“Trusting people more, in their judgement, is sometimes safer than trusting the government,” he said. Mr. Duhaime proposes the holding of a parliamentary commission to study this question and “align with the practice on the ground” when it “does not harm security”.

He would like to allow this type of vehicle to cross “numbered roads” in unmarked places, modulate the speed according to the conditions on the trails and allow trailers that exceed the regulatory length of 1.5 meters.

Registration and insurance for motorcycles as well as the approval of new types of electric vehicles, such as scooters, would also be part of it. “Each city adopts its own regulations, it creates a total mess,” he argued. The Conservative leader clarified that the Quebec government could issue recommendations to them without deciding for them.
