No more disco for Dua Lipa? The British singer reveals that her next album, expected in 2024, will be a psychedelic pop homage to London’s rave culture. This is what we can learn in a long interview she gave to the magazine Rolling Stone, of which here are some highlights.
DL3, as Dua Lipa admirers call the album, still without a title or release date, will not be a copy and paste of her immensely popular Future Nostalgia (2020). At Rolling Stone, Dua Lipa says she was inspired by important bands from the British music scene of the 1990s: Primal Scream and Massive Attack. Even her appearance will be less flamboyant, she announces. “The album is a little more raw. I want to capture the essence of youth, freedom, having fun and just letting things happen, whether positive or negative,” she says.
- In search of perfection
Anyone who has seen Dua Lipa in concert will confirm this. Everything is done to offer the best possible product. Her collaborators confirm that she is also hyper meticulous (perfectionist, obsessive? It’s your choice…) in the studio. She can rewrite each sentence until she considers it perfect. It took months to conclude Houdini, his most recent song. Dua Lipa justifies herself. “I really care about the reaction of my fans.”
Who does a star hang out with? Other stars, of course. In the case of Dua Lipa, we can even guess that her address book contains the coordinates of legends. According to Rolling Stone, the Albanian-born artist reportedly dines regularly with Elton John and was invited to a Mick Jagger Christmas party. “I danced with him in his living room,” she says.
At 28, Dua Lipa is a sweetheart, as the celebrity gossip sites would write. After dating the model Anwar Hadid, here she is as free as the air and, she notes, finding love again is not an easy task, no matter how attractive she is. “Meeting someone is a bit confusing. It goes through friends of friends or someone you trust. It’s not really that simple, I suppose, when you’re a public figure.”
Like Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa took charge of her affairs. In 2022, she left her management house and bought the rights to her music. She has this advice for young artists. “Pay attention quickly, especially to the business side. There aren’t enough people telling young people that.”
After making a brief appearance in the film Barbie, Dua Lipa will make her official film debut in Argylle, a comedy by Matthew Vaughn with Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell (in theaters February 2). The director insisted that she not take any classes before filming, so that she could be herself on set. “If she was nervous, she hid it well,” he told the magazine.
