Dry moors, nesting boxes and protective walls with Bruno Frey

Bruno Frey, former tiler, lives in Blotzheim. Very regularly, this 69-year-old retiree spends his free time climbing low walls in the dry moors bordering the vineyards in the corner of Westhalten.

These low walls, some built 2 or 3 centuries ago and now in ruins, are real treasures of diversity. Insects, reptiles, batrachians, birds come to live there once “repaired”.

This whole ecosystem is beneficial for the surrounding vines, and allows the return of endangered species from our regions. In addition, the low walls make it possible to accumulate the overflow of humidity or heat, and to redistribute it if necessary (at night, for example).

The winegrowers see favorably this work which he carries out with relentlessness, and entirely on a voluntary basis.

Similarly, Bruno Frey installs many nest boxes at home and where he can. He also gives you some advice on how to install one at home (he recommends the Schwegler brand, a reference).

Bruno Frey hopes that other people will take an interest in these low walls which can help nature regain its rights. Biodiversity, preservation of heritage, indirect protection of vines, aesthetics for green tourism: there is everything to gain.
