Fires, drought… The whole of southern Europe is suffering from the lack of water. Due to global warming, droughts are increasing and arriving earlier and earlier. Spain and Greece are battling the fires, and Italy has declared a state of emergency in five northern regions.

Around Porto Germano (Greece)in the afternoon of Tuesday 5 July, the canadairs and helicopters attempted to douse the flames. The fire fighters went directly to the sea to get the water they so badly needed. It’s fire season in Greece. For the single day of Monday, July 4, 53 fire starts were counted, fanned by strong winds and high heat.

Tuesday 5 July, at Venta de moro (Spain)500 firefighters were mobilized to try to control a fire that broke out on Sunday 3 July. Drought is also one of the causes. According to an expert report, Spain has been suffering from unprecedented aridity for more than a millennium. 1,300 hectares went up in smoke at Venta de moro. In Italy, the Po river is almost dry. This is the consequence of a historic drought. A state of emergency has been declared in five regions in the north of the country.
