10% of students enrolled to become nurses drop out before graduation. This figure has tripled in the past 10 years. As a result, the Minister of Health is planning an overhaul of training.

In Dole (Jura), first-year nursing students attend a psychology course. They were 70 registered in September, but several gave up along the way. “We are in total at 13 interruptions”, indicates Nathalie Blanchard, the director of the IFSI of Dole. These figures are consistent with the national average, and reflect in particular the consideration of the difficulty of the profession by these future professionals. According to a student organization, nearly 60% of them have already thought of stopping their training.

A complete overhaul

“Some people may imagine that the job of a nurse is to do bandages. When in reality, there is a lot of relationship, taking care of people”, believes Valentin Brochet, delegate of student nurses at Dole. However, training still attracts Franche-Comté. This year, there were more than 3,000 applicants, for 400 places. The end of the entrance examination would have accentuated the orientation errors. The week of May 15, the Minister of Health announced a complete overhaul of nursing training, by the start of the 2024 school year.
