For a year, the SNCF has been testing driverless TER trains. The “Autonomous train” project includes a TER Regio 2N prototype train. It is equipped with an “autonomous train” module and is currently circulating with engineers and technicians. A series of tests already carried out in Hauts-de-France have made it possible to evaluate the signal recognition systems along the track, the automation of the acceleration and the braking system. With autonomous TERs, the SNCF aims to make its trains more reliable in terms of safety, timetables and traffic flow. The profession of train driver will evolve towards those of tele-drivers, tele-repairers and supervisors.
The project hopes to be validated and authorized within a year. So, until then, the next time you board a TER, will there be a driver on board?
