We know the virtues of tea consumption in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, but the relationship with type 2 diabetes was until now rather vague. The work of Chinese researchers presented this weekend at the congress of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes is therefore instructive.
>> The effects of coffee are much stronger and deeper than expected
These scientists from the University of Wuhan, China, have synthesized 19 international studies on more than a million people and found that daily consumption of tea, whether green or black, reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Remember that type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes (90% of cases), it is generally related to diet and lifestyle.
According to these researchers, consuming one to three cups a day for 10 years reduces the risk by about 4%. But the protective effect is especially interesting for heavy tea drinkers: with four cupses per day or more. The risk of type two diabetes is reduced by 17%.
The authors specify that the link of cause and effect is not established, but according to them, the polyphenols of the tea have an effect on the glycemia.
The study did not look at the fact of oversweetening the subject tea, but it seems logical not to abuse sugar if one seeks to limit the risk of diabetes.
That being said, obviously better to drink slightly sweetened tea than no tea at all. Another study published last month and covering 500,000 Britons compared the mortality of tea drinkers with that of non-drinkers. And, participants who reported drinking 2 or more cups of tea a day had a 9-13% lower mortality risk than others even if they used to add a little milk or sugar to the cup.
