(Toronto) A late home goal from Jacen Russell-Rowe helped Guadeloupe draw 2-2 against Canada in their CONCACAF Gold Cup opener on Tuesday. at BMO Field.
Lucas Cavallini scored for Canada, the country’s second goal being scored by the opposition into their own net.
Thierry Ambrose scored Guadeloupe’s other goal.
In its history, Canada is 2-1-1 against Guadeloupe, while the previous two games were also in the Gold Cup group stage.
Ranked 47e in the world, the Canadian team will then head to Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, where they will face Guatemala on 1er July, as well as Cuba on July 4, to complete its Group D matches.
The 16-team tournament runs until July 16, across 15 stadiums and 14 cities. BMO Field is Canada’s only stop, and only for Tuesday’s game.
Ambrose opened the scoring at the 23e minute of play. Matthias Phaeton spotted Jordan Leborgne near the penalty area, before the latter made the pass to Ambrose, who beat both Steven Vitória and goalkeeper Milan Borjan.
Canada took a 2-1 lead in the 71e minute when his opponent scores in his own net.
Guadeloupe, however, tied the game three minutes into stoppage time when a clearance attempt from Russell-Rowe ended its way into its own goal.
