In Charente-Maritime, a nine-year-old girl died on Wednesday July 20 after being trampled by a pony. Tuesday, in Ille-et-Vilaine, 15 people including children were injured more or less seriously by ponies. What is the usual safety device in equestrian centers?

In Chaillevette (Charente Maritime)even before discovering their mount, the children of a summer camp have the right to a reminder of the safety rules. Bruno Balma supervises a group of about ten children, and has to face the apprehension of some face to ponies. He doesn’t hesitate to remind them that above all, they have to put the animal in confidence. Once the greetings have been made and the ponies brushed, it is also necessary to ensure that you are well equipped.

All protections must comply with specific rules. Thus, helmets called “bombs” are mandatory. “As soon as we start jumping a little bit, to make it a sport more than a hobby, [il faut une] back protector. It protects the back, the viscera. It reassures riders, parents, children and teachers”explains Fabienne Tourlanddirector of the equestrian center “Le Petit Carrousel”. For the group ofbeginner childrenfour supervisors from the center are present to guide them during the session. Something to reassure the leaders of the colony.
