Drama in Akwesasne | Police seize two vehicles

Mohawk police in Akwesasne seized two vehicles as part of their investigation into the deaths of eight migrants who drowned in the St. Lawrence River in late March.

Persons of interest have also been identified by investigators, who are still trying to locate them.

“The Akwesasne Mohawk Police will not release information about the registered owners of seized vehicles,” she said in a notice released Thursday.

The seizures were made Wednesday on Cornwall Island, on the Ontario side, and in Tsi Snaihne, Que., where the remains were found. Requests for search warrants have been obtained to examine the vehicles, believed to be linked to the tragedy.

At the end of March, eight migrants, including two children, perished while trying to cross the icy waters of the St. Lawrence River. Two families, one Romanian, the other Indian, were trying to enter the United States illegally from Canada.

Investigators are still trying to determine the chronology of events that led to the tragedy, including whether the trip was facilitated by one or more individuals.

“Even the smallest piece of information can be important,” said Acting Master Sergeant Inspector Kariwate Mitchell.
