Education Minister Bernard Drainville announced Wednesday that he will issue a directive to ban prayer rooms in classrooms in Quebec public schools.
“It is simply not compatible with the principle of secularism and with the law on secularism” of the Quebec state, he said, during a scrum before entering the Blue Room .
“Schools in Quebec are secular and they must remain so,” insisted the Minister of Education.
Earlier this week, Cogeco Nouvelles reported that two Laval high schools allowed the temporary opening of a “resourcing” room to allow students of the Muslim faith to pray.
“School is not a place of prayer. It’s not complicated,” insisted Mr. Drainville.
There are all kinds of ways to pray, the minister pointed out. “I cannot forbid prayer. I ban prayer rooms in classrooms. Now, if someone wants to pray silently, that’s their basic right. »
