After reaching the finale of two separate seasons of drag race, Rita Baga goes to the other side of the panel. The Quebecer now animates Drag Race Belgiumwhich starts this Thursday on Crave.
“I’ve worked so hard for 16 years to get here. I really feel in my place, ”says Rita Baga in an interview with the Log.
The announcement of her title as animator at Drag Race Belgium still created a stir among fans of the franchise. While many celebrated this news, a certain detail made others wince: Rita Baga is Quebecer – obviously – and not Belgian.
However, she lived in the flat country for a while, a few years ago, as part of her studies. And it was, after all, after a rigorous audition process that the production decided on Rita Baga to pilot this first Belgian edition.
“I expected some to be happy and others angry. The fans of drag race, in general, are highly polarized. They love it or they hate it, often without a middle ground,” says Rita Baga.
“Ultimately, I wasn’t given the job on a silver platter; I was chosen because the producers felt that I was the most qualified. And I’m very proud of what I’ve done for work on Drag Race Belgium “, she completes.
Rita Baga thus becomes the third candidate of drag race to inherit the position of host for an international version. Brooke Lynn Hytes directs the Canadian version, while Nicky Doll holds the reins of the French edition. Jiggly Caliente holds the position of permanent judge for the Filipino declination.
Celebrate Belgian culture
It is therefore this afternoon – due to the time difference – that Quebecers will be able to discover this new European version of the phenomenon. RuPaul’s Drag Race. This is obviously inspired by other editions of the franchise, but forges its own version of the phenomenon, just to stick to Belgian culture.
The overall winner of Drag Race Belgium will receive a crown and a scepter, in addition to a cash prize worth 20,000 euros (just over 28,000 Canadian dollars). And if a second season has not yet been ordered, time slots are already blocked in Rita Baga’s agenda for a possible filming.
