Drag queens are increasingly targeted by neo-conservatives in the United States. Several states are considering limiting their performance space, particularly through shows.
Their shows, glamorous and all in sequins, have become the favorite target of American ultra-conservatives. The drags–queens and the drags–kings face unprecedented laws, while 12 states in the United States want to completely ban this type of cabaret. It is now with apprehension that Alpha Andromedadrag–queen, takes the stage in California (USA). “It’s really hard to be a drag–queen in 2023″she says.
Most visible symbol of LGBTQ+ rights
Since the beginning of the year, anti-drag laws have multiplied. There is a total ban in Tennessee. In Florida, in the state of the very conservative Governor, Ron de Santisa set of laws was passed to limit this kind of performance if echildren are in the audience. “We’re going to do it, like it or not”he says.
If these laws are challenged by several judges, the fight rages in the street between the two camps. In front of a bookstore, a neo-Nazi group even gathered to threaten a drag–come queenand read to children.
