In China, the 13 million inhabitants of the city of Xi’an have been confined for a week. Several other municipalities are implementing radical measures in order to respond to the “zero Covid” policy.

In China, failure to follow sanitary rules can be punished with public humiliation. Handcuffed, surrounded by guards in coveralls, four men accused of helping foreigners enter China despite the borders being closed were forced to march through the streets, with their names and photos displayed on a sign. The method has been denounced by the official press.

Faced with Covid-19, the measures in some Chinese cities are now intended to be draconian. 13 million residents have been confined to Xi’an for a week. The food supply is only done every three days. Insufficient for some residents, who shout their anger on social networks. Local authorities recognize that restrictions are weighing on the food supply, but priority is given to testing: 160,000 people have been deployed to take samples. Yet only 207 people have tested positive across China in the past 24 hours.
