Spain: dozens of people evacuated due to fire
(France 2)
Spain is facing abnormally high temperatures. A fire has already burned more than 500 hectares of forest in the southeast of the country on Monday April 15, and dozens of people have been evacuated.
A wall of flames devours more vegetation as the hours pass in southeastern Spain. Monday April 15, the fire has already burned more than 500 hectares of forest in less than 24 hours. Temperatures are unusually high for the season, with nearly 30°C recorded. “It was dangerous because the fire spread very quickly, we had to warn people”says Javier Montero, Regional Secretary for Security and Emergencies of the Valencian Community.
An early fire and difficult conditions
The fire broke out on Sunday in the small Spanish town of Tarbena, between Valencia and Alicante. The region is arid and wooded, covered with particularly flammable pine trees. All night, firefighters tried to contain the blaze, but their task was difficult because the area was mountainous and steep. Water bomber helicopters refuel in the pools. As a precaution, some residents had to leave the area. 180 people were evacuated because of this early fire.
