A goal was enough for Borussia Dortmund to take the advantage over Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday May 1 in the semi-final first leg of the Champions League. Two posts thwarted the Parisian attackers, Gianluigi Donnaruma frustrated those of the BVB. The outcome of this confrontation remains uncertain. The return match will take place at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday May 7.
Gianluigi Donnarumma: 6.5/10
What can he do about Niclas Füllkrug’s goal? Not much. On the other hand, if the Germans have never led by more than one goal, it is because of the Italian goalkeeper, who saved Marcel Sabitzer’s two attempts, the first with his chest (14th), the second with his knee. (43rd). Concentrated against Jadon Sancho (75th), the former AC Milan goalkeeper was less worried in the second period.
Achraf Hakimi: 6.5/10
He finished with his hands on his knees having given a lot. His valuable placement made Karim Adeyemi lose his throat, who spent a lot defensively. The former Dortmund player shot the post (51st) while following Kylian Mbappé’s big chance and he finished strong by delivering an almost decisive pass to Ousmane Dembélé (81st). The most proactive Parisian defender.
Marquinhos: 5/10
He finished better. His decisive save against Julian Brandt (84th) is worth gold for the return match. The Brazilian captain’s head had already been in the path of a heavy strike from the same German player. On the other hand, he covers Niclas Füllkrug on the only goal of the evening, which inevitably tarnishes his defensive record (36th).
Lucas Hernandez: not rated
He was well placed to repel Jadon Sancho’s first cross (6th). The small delay on the German goal is not really attributable to him as Schlotterbeck’s opening was unpredictable. Hit in the left knee, he left his place to Lucas Beraldo (5/10) which we have seen little, except to play short and without risk.
Nuno Mendes: 2/10
A nightmare. His double error against Jadon Sancho and Julian Brandit set his side on fire. Misaligned, he covers – with Marquinhos – the German striker (36th). Waiting against Sancho, who provoked a lot, the Portuguese let the English international escape him and serve Füllkrug. That it only cost his team a goal is a lesser evil.
Vitinha: 6.5/10
Great technical accuracy and lucidity in the direction of the game, from his low position. Did he just lose a ball? Also useful for pressing in the first minutes, he generally contained Julian Brandt in his zone. A shot off target to his credit (82nd).
Fabian Ruiz: 4.5/10
Even if it’s not his role, the two big chances he missed could have changed the face of the match. But the Spaniard did not target his first header (56th) nor the second, on a precise serve from Vitinha (87th). Available in the first minutes to support Nuno Mendes against Sancho.
Warren Zaire-Emery: 5/10
As Fabian Ruiz helped Nuno Mendes on the right, the French international assisted Achraf Hakimi until the yellow card given to Ian Maatsen, who reduced the Dutch side’s contribution and relieved him. Rather discreet in the construction of the game, the one who extended his contract last week closed well against Sancho while a loss of ball had put PSG in difficulty (50th).
Ousmane Dembélé: 6/10
He unleashed the first two Parisian strikes, off target (11th and 18th). Luis Enrique had asked him to close Emre Can to hinder the first German restart. He did it well. His dribbling caused panic (45th + 2) and Gregor Kobel was used when “Dembouz” combined with Kylian Mbappé (72nd). The former BVB winger will perhaps regret having shot over on a good serve from Hakimi (81st).
Kylian Mbappé: 5/10
He would have been the Parisian hero of the evening if Gregor Kobel’s left post had not repelled his curling right-footed shot that he mastered so well (51st). The captain of the France team warmed the goalkeeper’s gloves again (54th) before throwing Dembélé with a delicious ladle (72nd).
The rest of the time, deprived of depth, he mainly played with his back to goal, caught in the trap formed by Nico Schlotterbeck and Mats Hummels. His deviation for Fabian Ruiz was well felt (23rd).
Bradley Barcola: 4.5/10
The first PSG player to score a shot after returning from the locker room (48th), he was not sought further by his teammates. We can regret it. The former Lyonnais had good intuitions but he lacked the physical impact to transform them into dangerous situations. Replaced by Randal Kolo Muani (65th) who tried to combine with Mbappé. It remained at the intention stage.
