The outcome of the case will not be known until after the US presidential election. The sentencing of Republican candidate Donald Trump, found guilty of 34 crimes in a case of concealed payments to a porn star, has been postponed until November 26 by a New York judge, according to a court document released Friday, September 6.

“This is not a decision that the Court takes lightly, but it is the decision that, in the eyes of the Court, best serves the interests of justice.”wrote Judge Juan Merchan, who was hearing multiple appeals from Donald Trump’s defense. The former US president’s lawyers had requested a new delay after a resounding decision by the US Supreme Court, with a conservative majority, which broadened the scope of presidential criminal immunity (and could thus benefit the conservative former president).

At the end of a historic trial at the end of May, the first criminal trial for a former president, Donald Trump was found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying accounting documents. They were used to hide, just before his victory in the 2016 presidential election, a payment of $130,000 (117,000 euros) to a porn actress, Stormy Daniels, so that she would keep quiet about a sexual relationship she said she had with him in 2006. Donald Trump has always denied these claims.

The decision is a big win for Trump, because American voters won’t know his sentence when they cast their ballots for president on Nov. 5. The Republican candidate faces a maximum sentence of a prison sentence, but many experts say an alternative sentence, such as a suspended sentence, is more likely.

“I didn’t do anything wrong!”reacted Donald Trump on the Truth Social network, once again denouncing a “political attack” of “the extreme left (…) to interfere in the election”. “The case should be closed”he assures, describing the procedure as “banana republic ‘thing'”.
