Senator JD Vance, chosen by Donald Trump to assist him in his campaign, accepted the Republican nomination and called on America on Wednesday, July 18, to “choose a new path”, during his big speech at the Milwaukee convention.
“We are united in victory”addressed his party by the man who will become vice president of the United States if the Republican wins in November.
The 39-year-old elected official, in a blue suit and tie, formally accepted the Republican nomination, under the eyes of Donald Trump, seated in a red stand at the large Milwaukee sports complex.
Just before going on stage, JD Vance exchanged a hug with his wife Usha, a lawyer who announced him on stage as a “powerful illustration of the American dream.” The author of a best-selling biography describing the rural, deindustrialized America of the forgotten, he was propelled to the forefront when Donald Trump announced Monday that he was choosing him as his running mate for the White House race.
For a presidential candidate, this choice often meets the objective of seducing new voters, or of compensating for weaknesses identified in terms of image or program. JD Vance, an anti-system elected official from a modest background, with a unique background since he has had a career in the army as well as in Silicon Valley, should reassure the party’s most right-wing voters, while Donald Trump is trying to make inroads among moderates.
In the US Senate, he stood out for his fierce opposition to aid to Ukraine, demanding that these funds be allocated instead to the fight against illegal immigration.
