A cruel setback. Former US President Donald Trump, once again a candidate for the White House, on Saturday February 24 inflicted a scathing defeat on his last Republican rival, Nikki Haley, during the South Carolina primary. With more than 85% of the ballots counted, the former real estate mogul was well ahead, with around 60% of the votes. Nikki Haley, who embodies a more moderate wing of the Republican Party, therefore lost in the state of which she was governor for six years.

The elected official, however, refused to give up the race for the Republican nomination. “I am not giving up this fight”declared Nikki Haley to her supporters during a rally in Charleston, promising to continue to “fight for America”. The plea of this 52-year-old woman is simple: “We will not survive four more years of Trump’s chaos.”

“This kind of offensive remarks will continue every day until the election,” said the fifty-year-old, referring to statements by Donald Trump, who suggested that his indictments made him a sympathetic candidate in the eyes of black voters. “This is the chaos that comes with Donald Trump,” Nikki Haley pointed out.

“Shameful and racist” comments about black voters

The former president, a candidate in the November election, was meeting with a group of conservative African-Americans in South Carolina on Friday evening when he said: “A lot of people say that black people like me because they have suffered so much and been discriminated against and they see me as someone who has been discriminated against.” Mired in legal troubles, Donald Trump also said, regarding his now famous mug shot: “You know who adopted her more than anyone else ? The black population is incredible.”

These comments were criticized by Democrats and Republicans alike, seeing very unwelcome connections between African-Americans and crime. “Donald Trump took the stage to make shameful and racist comments”, denounced Joe Biden in a press release. On Saturday, after his victory in South Carolina, Donald Trump did not fail to target the current tenant of the White House. “Joe, you’re fired!”he launched from Columbia, the state capital, using his favorite slogan from the days of reality TV sets.

Despite his legal troubles, some of which put him at risk of prison, the tempestuous septuagenarian is the ultra-favorite candidate of the right, according to all the polls. The next Republican primary is scheduled for Tuesday in Michigan. The Republicans of Idaho, Missouri and North Dakota will then vote in turn, a well-orchestrated ballet which will lead the candidates to one of the biggest political meetings of the year, Super Tuesday, scheduled for March 5. Donald Trump’s first criminal trial will begin on March 25.
