The Republican candidate was evacuated and “is safe,” said the Secret Service, responsible for protecting presidents and former presidents.

It had been 52 years since a presidential candidate was killed or injured in an attack. Former US President Donald Trump escaped an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania (United States) on Saturday evening, July 13. A twenty-year-old man was identified by the FBI as the shooter, who died after firing the gun.

The Republican candidate was evacuated with a bloodied face after the shooting. “I was hit by a bullet that pierced the top of my right ear”Donald Trump said on his Truth Social platform, adding that“It is unbelievable that such an act could take place in our country”.

Donald Trump, who had just started his speech with one of his usual tirades on migrants, accusing Joe Biden of having let them enter the country en masse, was immediately tackled to the ground by Secret Service agents. In the audience, cries of fright erupted, spectators threw themselves to the ground.

After a few moments, Donald Trump stood up, his hair disheveled and without his red cap, surrounded by the agents. “Let me take my shoes”he was heard telling them. He was then escorted from the stage to his car, raising his fist in the air several times in defiance, to cheers from his supporters.
