(Washington) Donald Trump on Friday sharply attacked Kamala Harris and the Democratic camp, notably criticizing the new candidate’s positions on the Middle East for the November presidential election.
He called her a “radical leftist” and said her remarks about Israel, America’s top ally, were “disrespectful.”
The day before, after speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Kamala Harris had judged that “what has happened in Gaza” over the past nine months was “devastating”, adding that she “would not remain silent” and urging the Israeli leader to quickly reach a ceasefire.
The former Republican president met with Mr. Netanyahu on Friday. And at a rally in Florida, he later assured that the 59-year-old Democratic candidate “did not like Jews.” “She does not like Israel. That’s the way it is and that’s the way it will always be, she will not change,” he said.
The US vice president is married to Doug Emhoff, a Jewish lawyer who plays a very active role in the White House’s campaigns against anti-Semitism.
Donald Trump also again accused Kamala Harris of being in favor of “executing babies” in a violent anti-abortion diatribe. Accusations already made earlier in the week by the candidate, who unleashed his blows on his rival, engaged in the race for the White House after the withdrawal on Sunday of the outgoing president Joe Biden.
The Republican, now at 78 the oldest candidate in the history of the US presidential election, has also given his rival, nearly 20 years his junior, a new nickname: “Kamala the Liar”.
“It shows that he’s afraid. It shows that he knows that if they both end up on a stage, it’s not going to end well for him,” Pete Buttigieg, the Biden administration’s transportation secretary and a major supporter of Harris’ campaign, told MSNBC.
Cats
At the same time, Donald Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, remained embroiled in the controversy sparked by his attacks on Kamala Harris, who was referred to as the “childless old cat maid” stereotype.
On Friday, he refused to apologize, saying only that he had been “sarcastic” and that he still thought Democrats were “anti-family.”
Donald Trump, who thought he was going to face Joe Biden, the 81-year-old outgoing president who has lost his vigor and is accustomed to gaffes, finds himself facing an energetic and younger replacement.
The latter obtained significant support on Friday with the endorsement of former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, influential figures in the Democratic Party.
“At this critical moment for our country, we’re going to do everything in our power to make sure she wins in November,” Barack Obama, who waited until all the other heavyweights had come forward, said on X, adding that she would make a “fantastic president.”
“Monumental”
The support of former President Obama (2009-2017) amplifies the growing momentum of the campaign of the woman who was a prosecutor and senator of California before being elected as the first woman, but also the first black person and person of South Asian origin, to the vice-presidency of the country.
Beyond his party, Mme Harris has benefited from a wave of support from unions and ethnic minorities. And polls confirm a surge in popularity for the Democratic camp.
This new dynamic is also visible on the ground: people are rushing to listen to him even by videoconference, fundraising is breaking records and volunteers are flocking…
On Friday, support came from the Paris Olympics: American athletics legend Allyson Felix said that a victory for Mme Harris “would be monumental.”
Building on this momentum, Kamala Harris said she was “ready” to debate with Donald Trump. But the latter dodged the issue, deeming it “inopportune” for the time being to organize a face-to-face meeting before she is officially nominated.
This should happen in early August, two weeks before the Democratic convention in Chicago.
