Dominique de Villepin denounces the “dangerous drift” of the Les Républicains party

The former Prime Minister notes Wednesday on France Inter a “dangerous drift” of the LR party and fears that the dikes between the far right and the right are “in the process of jumping”.

Dominique de Villepin, former Prime Minister, denounces on Wednesday June 21 on France Inter the attitude of the Republican deputies who have tabled two bills on immigration. The former minister of Jacques Chirac considers that it is “a strategic mistake” and an “dangerous drift” for the LR party to go to the National Rally field. “They will not only lose their identity, their values and their principles which had been clearly established until Jacques Chirac”insists Dominique de Villepin.

>> Immigration: the LR proposals are a “low cost copy and paste” of the RN, ironically Jordan Bardella

For the former chief executive, “we are evolving from liberal democracy to illiberal democracy, practiced by someone like Viktor Orban”, Hungarian nationalist prime minister. Dominique de Villepin also assures that he “There are a number of Viktor Orban admirers among the Republicans”. He therefore fears that the dikes between the extreme right and the right in France will be “jumping” and regrets the behavior of a “a number of political leaders, including on the right”, who, because they have a “feeling of helplessness” think he “there is no other solution than to go up another notch, even if it means going to the side of the extremes”.

Politics is ‘giving way to communication’

Dominique de Villepin moreover has the feeling of observing a “straightening” French politics and “a march towards the far right which seems difficult to stop”. He considers that this political evolution has as its origin “the feeling of public powerlessness”. The right-wing former minister believes that the French have the impression that the “globalization assails them”that “their standard of living and their purchasing power are falling”, “that public services are deteriorating and that education and health are threatened”.

Faced with this observation, Dominique de Villepin calls for “stop the financial headlong rush” : “It’s time to stop the no matter what”, he hammers. It also recommends that the government “regain control of the situation, regain control of public services and restart the administrations”. “Governing finally becomes the priority when we have not ceased to believe that reform was necessary at all costs”adds the former Prime Minister.

To do this, Dominique de Villepin considers it necessary “to have ministers and administrations who have roadmaps and who try to move forward step by step”. He also pleads for there to be “less communication”regretting the fact that “politics is giving way”according to him, “to communication, hence the headlong rush in which we are in the direction of demagoguery and populism”.
