Dominican Republic | Former Dodger Raul Mondesi sentenced to prison

(Santo Domingo) Former Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Raul Mondesi was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison and ordered to pay a fine of US$507,000 (nearly $700,000) by a Dominican Republic court last Friday for corruption while he was mayor of San Cristobal.

Prosecutors accused the 53-year-old of embezzling $5 million while he was mayor, between 2010 and 2016. The sentence was handed down after a plea deal was reached with the prosecutor’s office.

Mondesi, whose son Adalberto Mondesi also played in the majors, spent six years under house arrest, meaning his sentence has already been served.

With the Dodgers, Mondesi won the National League Rookie of the Year award in 1994 and played in the All-Star Game the following season. The Dominican spent 13 seasons in the majors, winning two Gold Gloves.

Mondesi also played for the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Angels and Atlanta Braves. He finished his career with an offensive average of .273/.331/.485, 271 home runs and 860 RBIs.
