The police and gendarmerie services recorded a 10% increase in domestic violence in 2020, the statistics service of the Ministry of the Interior announced on Monday (November 22). These concerned 159,400 people of all sexes. About 87% of victims of domestic violence are women, or 139,200, a stable proportion compared to 2019, according to these figures, which do not count homicides.
According to this study, 125 people were also killed by their partner in 2020 against 173 in 2019, or 48 victims less. The vast majority of victims are women, they were 102 in 2020 and 146 in 2019.
Some 5,500 people (or 3% of victims), an overwhelming majority of women (5,400), have complained of rape or sexual assault by their spouses.
