Dolce & Gabbana launches already controversial perfume for dogs

(Rome) No more fighting over bathing them and the smell of wet fur? Italian luxury house Dolce & Gabbana has launched a new perfume for dogs, which has been immediately denounced by animal rights activists.

“Inspired by Domenico Dolce’s unconditional love for his faithful little dog Fefé, this delicate alcohol-free blend combines the fresh and delicate scents of Ylang-ylang, musk and sandalwood,” explains the Italian stylists’ website.

“A tender and captivating fragrance designed for a playful beauty routine,” the site assures those who want to spend 99 euros ($149) for this perfume.

For this price, you get a bottle of perfume with a 24-carat gold-plated dog paw and a necklace with a Dolce & Gabbana medallion.

But the international animal rights group PETA believes that “spraying (dogs) with a scent designed to appeal to humans, as is being done, can be very disruptive to them.”

Dogs “have hundreds of millions of extra receptors in their nostrils and can smell 10,000 to 100,000 times better than humans,” PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement sent to AFP.

Spraying perfumes on their fur “can cause irritation and stress and interfere with their ability to detect other odors in their environment and communicate with other animals they encounter,” she added.
