Forests: dogs must be on a leash from April 15
(France 2)
From April 15 to June 30, dogs must be kept on a leash in the forest so as not to disturb the animals during the birthing season. A decision that is not well understood.
Several times a week, Élodie Chalard, a dog trainer, walks dogs in a forest in Hauts-de-Seine, some without a leash. “We don’t have the problem of vehicles, it’s not dangerous, a priori“, she indicates. However, from April 15 to June 30, the leash becomes compulsory outside the forest paths. This measure aims to protect other animals, in the middle of the birthing season. However, the dog trainer does not intend to change his habits.
“A predatory instinct”
In the event of an inspection, the fine can rise to 750 euros. If the dog leaves the trail, it indeed represents a threat to other animals. “Some may have a predatory instinct and may want to eat litters of young rabbits (…). There is also the risk of disruption“, explains Hélène Gateau, veterinarian. The decree requiring the leash dates from 1955. The National Forestry Office is increasing its calls to order.
