A new attack by wolves, a growing protected species, took place in Saône-et-Loire. Breeders worry and adapt, training their dogs.
Rasta, a four-year-old Pyrenean mountain dog, is on the lookout. With the help of Rafale, the guide dog, Rasta le Patou gathers the whole herd. Guard dogs are essential to protect the herd from predators, and reassuring for the breeder. “Before having the guard dogs, I was always worried, because of a crow which came to sting the eyes of a lamb, a fox which came to steal a lamb from a sheep… Today I don’t don’t worry about that”says Anthony Chanvin, sheep breeder. “It has been a year and a half of hard work”he acknowledges.
More than a year of work is necessary
A necessary job to afford some peace of mind, especially in the face of the main threat, the wolf. With the attacks of the last few weeks, Anthony Chanvin is much more in demand by breeders, in search of protection dogs. “We need technical support from people who will know how to raise and educate dogs, so that we have the best possible dogs in the herds, to prevent attacks”, says Nicolas Carbognani, sheep breeder. More than a year of work will be necessary for these dogs to assimilate their role within the herd.
