Crosses to change the appearance of dogs cause hypertypes. Pathologies can then occur.

That morning, Obi-Wan and his mistress take over the veterinary clinic. For several months, the dog has had a lot of trouble breathing. In question: his short skull, his very flat nose and the excess skin which prevents him from taking in enough air. The dog needs to be operated on. This is not a surprise for his mistress who has already had three bulldogs. Third operation, however, she does not wish to change race.

“We started to see pathologies linked to this hypertype”

Pugs, French or English bulldogs, they have very fashionable baby heads. To make these dogs even more crunchy, breeders have carried out clever artificial crosses, the hypertype. Doctor Cyrill Poncet, veterinarian, denounces this drift. “The nose [du bulldog] became shorter and shorter, and we started to see pathologies linked to this hypertype”, laments the professional. In 2022, the French Association of Pet Veterinarians launched a campaign to raise awareness of the suffering of hypertyped animals.
