Does the motion of censure tabled by Nupes in the National Assembly have a chance of succeeding?

The National Rally announced that it would vote for the motion of no confidence on Monday, unlike the Republicans. The Liot deputies have not received instructions.

The Nupes announced on Thursday that it would table a new motion of censure against the government. This will be put to the vote on Monday, June 12 in the National Assembly. The previous one, filed by the Liot group and examined on March 20, had failed by nine votes. But this new attempt seems to have even less chance of succeeding, given the positions taken by the various parliamentary groups.

The National Rally group will vote for

The RN vice-president of the National Assembly, Sébastien Chenu, announced on Sunday June 11 that the deputies of his party would vote on Monday for the motion of censure tabled by the Nupes. “The 88 deputies of the National Rally will be there to vote for the motion of censure because we want the end of this text”explained the deputy from the North to RTL-Le Figaro-LCI. “We want Madame Borne to go away, with her reform under her arm”he added, adding however that“it is not an alliance with LFI”.

To the 149 votes of the deputies of the Nupes should therefore be added those of the RN, which remains however insufficient to reach the absolute majority (287 votes) to censure and bring down the government.

The LR group will not vote for the motion of censure

While Les Républicains were divided on the issue in March, the instruction not to vote for the motion of censure seems to be unanimous this time. Olivier Marleix, president of the LR group in the Assembly, did not change his mind, since he had already taken a position against the previous motion of censure. But for the 19 LR deputies who had voted for, the situation has changed. Their leader, Aurélien Pradié “do not think” vote on the motion on Monday. “She is disconnected from the subject, from the pension reform”he said on RMC.

Liot does not give voting instructions

In a press release issued on Friday, the Freedoms, Independents, Overseas and Territories group believes that “the conditions for the success of such a motion are not currently met”. He therefore chose not to join his signature to that of Nupes and will not give voting instructions to its 21 members either. “The deputies of the group will have complete freedom.”

The Renaissance group will support Elisabeth Borne

Guest of franceinfo, Maud Bregeon, spokesperson for the Renaissance group, denounced Sunday “a form of obsession with censorship on the part of the Nupes and the RN, which is worrying for parties which claim to come to power.” “I am not sure that an alliance of votes from the extremes will make a replacement majority”added the deputy of Hauts-de-Seine.

The deputies of the presidential majority are instructed not to vote for the motion of censure against the government. Transgressing this implicit rule would in fact act as an exclusion from the group.
