Master’s program in English at HEC, gateway schools, intensive English in 6e year, appointment of unilingual managers to the Caisse de dépôt et placement, financing of the English-speaking school network at a level well above the demographic weight of the English-speaking community, week devoted to the promotion of English in a French-speaking CEGEP, etc. We can no longer count the measures taken by French speakers who are expanding the place of English in Quebec.
Each time, the French speakers who rebel would be wrong. Each time, we retort the same refrain: French is not in danger within our province.
Why this unspeakable linguistic servility? At what point does a people become so enslaved by the language of another people that they are no longer aware of working towards their own annihilation?
Why, asked Baruch Spinoza 350 years ago, do some fight for their servitude as if it were for their salvation?
