Despite European sanctions against the Kremlin since the start of the war in Ukraine, Greece remains one of the main transporters of Russian oil.
Despite the sanctions, Russian oil is still arriving in Europe. It is delivered by a European country, Greece. Its boats are responsible for discreetly transporting Russian hydrocarbons to the rest of the world. While the embargo against Russian oil will come into force at the end of the year, Greek shipowners are advancing in masks. How do they do ? A ship under the Maltese flag, which is actually Greek, loads oil from another ship under the Russian flag. They then export the oil to the main European and world ports.
These revelations angered Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Indeed, this role of Greek transporters is far from negligible: 23.8 million barrels of Russian oil have been transported by Greek ships since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. Greece is therefore one of the main transporters of Russian oil, a role that goes against European sanctions.
