Collagen, which comes in many forms, is a star product on social networks. It would help fight against skin aging and improve health. What is it really ?
Anti-wrinkle creams, capsules, powder, drinks… Collagen is the new trendy product on social networks. When it comes to beauty, it promises to work miracles. It could also improve health. Is it really effective? Collagen is a protein, naturally produced in the body, present in skin, bones, ligaments, tendons and cartilage. The production of this protein decreases significantly after 25 or 30 years, hence the appearance of age-related wrinkles or joint pain.
“The problem is that when [il] arrives at the level of the intestines, it disintegrates into lots of proteins, it passes the intestinal barrier, and it is the skin which is served last”explains Isabelle Rousseaux, the vice-president of the National Union of Dermatologists, who specifies that there is no “no study that showed improvement over one or two years”. Indeed, the few positive studies carried out on the effectiveness of collagen on skin aging have not been done over the long term. The group of participants was also too small to draw any conclusions.
For pain, no scientific data shows the effectiveness of collagen in the prevention of art diseases
