While the European Union recently decided on a new package of sanctions against Russia, a question arises: are they really effective? Internet users claim that they would be circumvented by certain European companies by passing through neighboring countries.
On social networks, Internet users are ironic about the European Union sanctions against Russia, which would be circumvented by certain European companies by passing, according to them, through neighboring countries. But is it true? European exports to Turkey, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan have actually jumped since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, these countries have increased their exports to Russia.
A priority list of sanctioned products
Eric Dor, doctor of economic sciences and director of studies at IESEG, sees this as a sign of trade diverted to Moscow. The products which have seen their exports increase to countries neighboring Russia include industrial machines, road vehicles, but also household appliances. When contacted, the European Commission explained that it had established a priority list of sanctioned products. She says she is urging Russia’s neighboring countries to ban the re-export of these products. But it is clear that these calls seem to be little listened to.
