(France 2)

80% of our laws come from the European Union, according to an idea regularly relayed on social networks. It’s actually significantly less, more like around 20%.

80% of French laws would be imposed by the European Union. It’s an idea that is regularly relayed on social networks. In reality, this rate is more around 20%. This is the conclusion of a report published in 2014 by the Jacques Delors Institute, which is based on several studies carried out over more than 20 years. More recently, a professor of public law did the calculation for the year 2023: of the 95 laws and ordinances adopted last year in France, 14 of them apply European Union law, which represents 14 .7% of laws passed at European level.

Agriculture particularly concerned

Some sectors are more affected than others. This is particularly the case for agriculture. Around 40% of French laws were first voted on in Brussels, according to the European Commission website. A high figure which can be explained in particular by the common agricultural policy. On the other hand, the share of laws of European origin for housing or defense is less than 5%.
