Djokovic wins Astana tournament and secures 90th career title

Serbian Novak Djokovic needed just 75 minutes to claim his 90th career ATP Tour title on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of the Astana Tennis Open.

Djokovic dominated his rival from the start, winning the opener in just over a minute. The Serb didn’t face any break points, had 15 winners and only seven unforced errors.

Djokovic ended the duel on his third match point with a backhand winner.

For Djokovic, this is a fourth title in 2022 after his triumphs at the Wimbledon Open and at the Rome and Tel Aviv tournaments. His victory in Tel Aviv was recorded last week.

“I always hoped for a great career. Of course, I didn’t know how many finals I would play, how many tournaments I would win. But my intention has always been to achieve the greatest heights in our sport,” Djokovic said.

Tsitsipas was hoping to earn a third title in 2022, having emerged victorious from the Monte Carlo and Mallorca tournaments.

Tsitsipas saved three of the five break points he faced on Sunday but won just 42 percent of the points on his second serve as the 35-year-old Serbian posted an 80 percent winning percentage in this category.

“You know, 35 is not 25,” Djokovic remarked. “But I think experience helps in these kinds of games and on important occasions, as well as having the right mental approach. »
