As seeded N.1, Djokovic had been exempted from the first round.
In the quarter-finals, the man with 21 Grand Slam titles will face Canadian Vasek Pospisil (149e), who defeated Israeli Edan Leshem 6-3, 6-2 on Thursday.
Facing 115e world player, aged 36, Djokovic managed a quick first set, winning 6-0 in 29 minutes. The second round was more hung, the 35-year-old Serb, current world No.7, having left three games to his opponent whom he had met and beaten twice during his career.
After his new title at Wimbledon in July, Novak Djokovic had not played until the Laver Cup last week in London.
He had to skip the United States Open (August 26-September 11) because of his refusal to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
After Tel Aviv, Djokovic wants to play the Astana Open, from October 3 to 9 in Kazakhstan, before defending his title at the Paris Masters (October 31-November 6). Two tournaments where he should meet Carlos Alcaraz, the 19-year-old world No.1.
But the main objective of his end of the season remains the end-of-year Masters which will pit the first eight in the ATP ranking against each other, from November 13 to 20 in Turin.
